No fewer than 120 youths in Delta State are in prison for alleged rape, cultism and related offences, according to the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Peter Mrakpor.
Mrakpor spoke on Thursday on the current crime rate in the state after he had audience with the executive members of the Asaba, Effurun and Udu branches of the Nigeria Bar Association.
According to him, the 120 inmates committed the crimes within one week.
While charging members of the association to partner the state government in its fight against crime, the commissioner also said he would support Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s resolve in fighting for just, credible, and efficient legal reforms.
On the ongoing capacity building and computerisation of the Delta State Ministry of Justice, Mrakpor said over 250 laptops had been distributed to legal officers to equip them with modern tools for research purposes.
“The state chapter of the Nigeria Bar Association will partner with the state government to ensure the promotion of the rule of law and good governance in an atmosphere of peace and security,” he said.
